Quizz Novell as it ponders at the Internet crossroads

Harish Mehta

Harish Mehta Novell has reigned supreme over the network operating systems world for years. But the Web's caught its NetWare napping. Windows NT, OS/2 Warp and even some flavours of UNIX are threatening to dunk Netware under. A recent study conducted by the consultancy firm Aberdeen bears this out. Also falling revenue is seconding that the trend is downward, not onward.

The tragedy seems to have sprung, ironically, from an idea which Novell thought of first: to build applications into network OS. Windows NT, in particular, seems to have caught that bus.

But Novell has a huge installed base. Its loyal users, several hundreds in India alone, swear by the excellent support and distribution channels the company is famous for.

Novell, it is rumoured, has readied a strategy to leverage the goodwill with its Novell Directory Services. The NDS will include IntranetWare, a major upgrade to NetWare in over two years.

Harish Mehta, Chairman and Managing Director of Onward Novell Software India Limited, wears the war paint and steps into the com:port, Rediff On The Net's tech talk chat room.
