Robina Ahmed (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:27 IST)
Mr Mahindra: How do you rate India's achievements in this 50th year of Independence?

A Trotman (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:27 IST)
Good Morning, Anand. What is your prognosis for Indian industry now that we have turned 50? Will we be more competitive, more quality conscious?

Ajit Donald (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:28 IST)
Hi,Anand. Good to have a young man and not one of those fogies on the chat this morning. I want to ask: What is the greatest problem confronting Indian industry today?

THIRUVENKATACHARI MANIVANNAN (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:29 IST)
Good Morning Anand

Salman (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:29 IST)
Is this chat taking place in Bombay? I cannot believe that a businessman is turning up at 6 am!

saisuresh sivaswamy (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:30 IST)

THIRUVENKATACHARI MANIVANNAN (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:31 IST)
Discuss about 50 years before independents and 50 years after the independents. What will be India's position after 50 years in Industrial Development.

THIRUVENKATACHARI MANIVANNAN (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:34 IST)
Please call as MANNY

manimekalai sathyavanimuthu (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:37 IST)
ooohhh, is he married? what are his views on an institution like marriage in the 21st century

Robina Ahmed (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:40 IST)
Mr Mahindra,do you think Indian industry really has that kind of potentaial that many observers think it does, like Asian tiger...Overtaking China etc. Is there a validity to such claims?

THIRUVENKATACHARI MANIVANNAN (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:41 IST)
what's happening to Mr Anand. Whether he is busy or he is driking made in india coffee or taj tea.

sai (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:42 IST)
tell us mr mahindra, m&m took quite some time to move out of the jeep segment into smaller vehicles. what is on the anvil now for your company?

Ramakrishna (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:42 IST)
At this landmark of 50 yrs of Independence how do you look at the future of India asl country with industrial development.

THIRUVENKATACHARI MANIVANNAN (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:42 IST)
Good Morning Mr Anand

Salman (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:42 IST)
Is Anand in?

Ashwani (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:44 IST)
hiwith so much of automobile tie-ups what is the scope of your ford-escort

A Trotman (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:45 IST)
One thing that turns most Westerners off about doing business in India is the corruption. How do you think this menace can be overcome?

sandy (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:46 IST)
Mr Mahindra: Why is that you stuck up your production in automobiles sector the jeeps only and didn't venture into cars before liberalisation of the economy?

Robina Ahmed (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:46 IST)
Mr Anand, in your opinion is this 50th anniversary an occasion to celebrate or is it time for retrospection for Indian citizens and rulers.

sandy (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:46 IST)

princess (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:46 IST)
hello is anyone home? is the scion yet to rise in the east?

Salman (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:48 IST)
WELCOME AND JAI HIND TO ANAND MAHINDRA. I didn't realise that a man who collaborated with Ford could be a patriot! What vision of Indian industry does someone like you and say the Ambani boys have? I know the Ambanis want to be global players. Would you be content being just tops in the Indian market?

princess (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:46 IST)

Prem Panicker (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:49 IST)
Sandy, Mr Mahindra is taking the second question here... he will get to yours, do wait, and remember, multiple posts end up chasing all the other questions outa the site. Thanks. :}

Jeevan (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:49 IST)
Mr Mahindra: Where do you see market for your car Mahindra-Ford, when there are cheaper cars in INdian markets available. NOw, can you tell me as a customer, why should I buy your expensive car which give me same comforts as Cielo, Maruti 1000 or Opel. How your car is different from them??

THIRUVENKATACHARI MANIVANNAN (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:50 IST)
While Entering the name please mention your resident state and country. It will be very good to identify the person.

Ajit Donald (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:51 IST)
Do you believe liberalisation has been a success? I have friends in HP who were so frustrated by the lack of pace in decision making and the absence of infrastructure that they moved their project to China. We seem to be champs in going one step forwqard and two steps backward. Is this the Indian way of doing business?

Robina Ahmed (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:51 IST)
Mr Mahindra: what changes has Mahindra and Mahindran seen in the wake of liberalisation and the entrance of the MNCs? How is your company placed in this competition?

Jeevan (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:53 IST)
Mr Mahindra: Do you think our country will be able to maintain a growth rate of 7% this year??

A Trotman (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:53 IST)
If Minister Chidambaram asked you for counsel on how to tone up the Indian economy -- five steps to accelerate the reform process -- what would you tell him?

Jeevan (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:54 IST)
Mr Mahindra: What Mr Mohammad is doing? Is he also a famous business tycoon like your grandpa?????

THIRUVENKATACHARI MANIVANNAN (Thu Aug 14 1997 17:58 IST)
At present I am in Office CA USA. I will ask hundreds to you after reaching my house.

sandy (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:0 IST)
Mr Mahindra: Why do you think Maruti has taken over the car market all over India? In your opinion, what lies in their success. Do you think it is economical and that is why it has outsold all its rivals???

princess (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:2 IST)
wow, its good to hear that your co is not in the recession cycle, although you ducked my query on government role. cool on another plane, are you married? what does she do? i am sure she is a knockout, hey? but tell me, is there role for a marriage in this century? over here, liveins are the rage? i am sure you studied abroad (which indian tycoon has not?), so how come you have gone straight? and, like most indian businessmen, are you a marwari as well? if not, a gujarati? if neither, i would be surprised

A Trotman (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:2 IST)
Another thing that bothers me is that Indian businessmen are only too willing to bend the rules to get ahead. This may be a consequence of the so-called license raj, but how willing are guys like you -- the men of the future -- willing to abstain from such calculative behaviour?

sandy (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:5 IST)
Mr Mahindra: Do you think it was a mistake on the part of Indian government for not starting the liberalisation process in mid 70s than 90s???

Robina Ahmed (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:6 IST)
Mr Ahmed, have you ever visited Pakistan?

Mewar (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:6 IST)
You are in constant touch with Indian politicians. One thing that bugs me no end is the babble of discordant voices that emrge abiout the future of liberalisation. Even the BJP speaks in multiple voices. I fear that we may revert back to the past, despite all this talk about liberalisation being irreverisble. Would you agree? I wish we were a one party system like Malaysia where things were more definite ane the economy was not hostage to petty politics.

Robina Ahmed (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:10 IST)
Mr Mahindra, in your assessment where do you see Indian economy in the next five years?

sandy (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:11 IST)
Mr Mahindra: After the withdrawal of IRA in parliament, do you think there has been a setback to the reforms process?

A Trotman (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:15 IST)
No, I am not Sir Alex, just someone who is an admirer of his style... and, after reading your responses, of yours! When I was in India, after reading your BI columns, I used to think that beyond E F Schumacher, you had done no reading at all. But I suppose the influence of the former Ms Khandelwal has worked some wonders, and I would like to place on record my admiration for your eloquence!

princess (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:17 IST)
two of my questions are pending a reply (sob, sob)

Ajit Donald (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:18 IST)
I don't believe the Indian government has a gameplan. After six years, we are still drafting a policy for ports. It is frustrating. Why are we so pathetic?

princess (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:21 IST)
never mind mr mahindra. i shall persevere. tell me, isnt it true that after the insurance regulatory authority bill's defeat in parliament, the bombay club, that anachronistic cabal resisting reforms, has found teeth once again? are you part of this gang (i would be appalled if you say yes, and would not talk to you again)

Salman (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:24 IST)
What would you like see changing in India for us to become a major superpower?

Robina Ahmed (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:25 IST)
Mr Mahindra, the last few years have seen the Indian markets flooded with products. It was a boom alright but has not really been indicative of stringent quality control. Why are Indians straddled with sub standard goods? Go to a Nike, Reebok...and there's hardly anything that catches your eye and worth buying? Why is it so?

sandy (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:28 IST)
Mr Mahindra: Where do you see your comapnies after 20 years, do you think that it will rank as one of the top car producers in India??

Robina Ahmed (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:35 IST)
Mr Mahindra, just a curious question--why did you choose such an early hour for this chat? 6:00 am, wow!!

sandy (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:40 IST)
Mr Mahindra: Are there any plans to come out with a photography book in near future???

ravikc (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:41 IST)
Mr. Mahindra, a jeep question if you don't mind. I was wondering if the market for Wrangler like jeeps is existent in India. And whether Sports Utility Vehicles will be seen on Indian roads in the near future?

A Trotman (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:43 IST)
Who are the Indian businessmen you admire most? And what do you admire them for?

princess (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:45 IST)
will you be answering my questions or should i shut up and ship out?

ravikc (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:49 IST)
The question on industrialists joing politics is a good one. It appears that traditionally the business class seem content with calling the shots from the background. Using money only to lobby or finance elections...

sandy (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:54 IST)
Mr Mahindra: Enough on business talk. Now can you tell us, what did you do last night?

Sriram (Thu Aug 14 1997 18:59 IST)
Mr. Mahindra... what does it feel like being a top director of one of the nation's largest industrial firms, while much of India still cannot afford your products? Is this a practical reality or a goal for change in the future.

cvrmurthy (Thu Aug 14 1997 19:0 IST)
Dear sir Indian industrialists have exploited consumers with inferior quality and high price and lowest regard for customer service ex Bajaj Auto. Why do you require protection

Archy (Thu Aug 14 1997 19:3 IST)
Mr Mahindra: Any idea to enter politics??

Ajit Donald (Thu Aug 14 1997 19:4 IST)
