Corporates invest big to clean up India, build toilets

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged India Inc to join the ‘Clean India’ initiative, several companies have announced plans to improve sanitation facilities in rural areas.

Stressing on "dignity of women", Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15 asked Parliamentarians and the corporate sector to help build separate toilets for girls in schools across the country by next year.

Companies like TCS will now invest crores to build basic sanitation facilities for millions of poor people across India.

TCS

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) said it has pledged Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) toward financing hygienic sanitation facilities for girl students across 10,000 schools.

TCS will earmark a budget of Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) to be spent on this initiative, which will help children, especially girl students, to participate in school education for a longer period of time and play a larger economic role in their communities, TCS said in a statement.

Hindustan Zinc Ltd

Vedanta Group company Hindustan Zinc will construct 10,000 toilets in Rajasthan.

The company has already constructed 9,000 toilets out of its planned 30,000 in Rajasthan villages in collaboration with the state government.

London-listed Vedanta at present holds 64.92 percent stake in HZL, which has launched campaign ‘Maryada’ to educate people about good sanitation habits and also construct toilets in rural areas of Rajasthan.

Bharti Enterprises

Bharti Foundation had also announced investment of up to Rs 100 crore in constructing toilets in Ludhiana over the next three years.

Bharti Foundation will build toilets for girls in government schools.

Hindustan Unilever Limited

Hindustan Unilever Limited runs a Domex Toilet Academy.

The academy aims to build 24,000 toilets by 2015 in areas where people do not have access to toilets.

Aditya Birla Group

The Aditya Birla Group plans to build 10,000 facilities this year.

The company plans to build toilets in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.

ITC

ITC also plans to build 10,000 facilities for the poor this year.

ITC has already invested in Mission Sunehra Kal.

This programme helps villages develop water and forest resources, empower women economically and improve primary education facilities.
