Honda Jazz entered the Indian market in 2009. It was a niche product in its class with unique Japanese styling and excellent quality.

At the time of launch it came with 26 per cent import content, Honda launched the Jazz at starting price of Rs 800,000.

People of India were about-face on this and soon Honda re-launched Jazz with a reduced price tag that came as a relief.

The third generation Honda Jazz AKA Fit has been launched in the Japanese market last year in September.

Upon launch, it grabbed more than 62,000 bookings which made it one of the largest selling cars in Japan.

Honda Jazz

Interiors are more modernistic with elegant dashboard, premium upholstery and airy cabin. The car will be launched with both petrol and diesel engine choices.

Expect the same 1.2-litre 87bhp petrol engine and 1.5-litre 99hp diesel engine doing duty in Amaze sedan.

An automatic transmission choice will be there besides standard 5-speed manual. The car is expected to be priced between Rs 450,000 - Rs 660,000.

Maruti Suzuki Swift

Swift derives power from a 1.2-litre petrol engine that generates 86hp and 114Nm of torque and the 1.3-litre engine in diesel version producing 74hp and 190Nm of peak torque.

Both the engines come mated to a 5-speed manual transmission gearbox while an automatic variant is still a miss in the car.

Some of the weak points about the car are confined rear legroom and mediocre material used inside the cabin. Swift ranges from Rs 440,000 - 670,000.

Hyundai i20

It is currently the closest competitor of Swift in the segment. It debuted in the Indian market with segment first features like automatic headlamps, reverse parking camera, rain sensing wipers and six airbags.

The interiors of this car are considered premium compared to Swift. The facelifted i20 sports company's 'Fluidic' design philosophy.

Both the diesel and petrol variants are available to counter Swift.

Hyundai i20

The 1.2-litre petrol engine pumps out 83hp and 114Nm which comes head to head with Swift. The 1.4-litre diesel unit produces 89hp and 220Nm of peak torque.

In terms of transmission choices, it has an edge over Swift as it is available in 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission system.

Price range which is in between INR 4.8-7.7 lakh is the only factor that keeps i20 behind Swift but it could be made competitive when the new Jazz comes to the foray.

The 1.2-litre petrol engine yields power of 74hp and 110Nm of torque while the 1.2-litre diesel makes 74hp and 180Nm of max torque.

Polo was the first car to come with 7-speed dual clutch DSG transmission gearbox and probably the second to i20 to offer automatic transmission system.

The price ranges from Rs 490,000 - 810,000 which is currently the highest in the segment.
