Trai ready for talks on single licence issue

Having received the latest data on entry fees paid by basic service operators before the new telecom policy came into effect, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Monday issued an addendum to its consultation paper on unified license regime and said it was ready to consider all suggestions in this regard.

According to the revised data received from the Department of Telecommunication, Hughes Telecom paid the maximum entry fee for Maharashtra circle at Rs 532.55 crore (Rs 5.325 billion) followed by Reliance Telecom paying Rs 179.09 crore (Rs 1.790 billion) for procuring a license for Gujarat.

HFCL Infotel Ltd paid Rs 177.59 crore (Rs 1.775 billion) for Punjab circle and Tata Teleservices's entry fee for Andhra Pradesh was Rs 161.47 crore (Rs 1.614 billion), a TRAI release said.

Bharti Telenet's entry fee for starting basic service stood at Rs 35.33 crore (Rs 353.3 million) in Madhya Pradesh and Shyam Telelink paid Rs 29.29 crore (Rs 292.9 million) for Rajasthan.

Reliance Telecom also paid Rs 20 crore (Rs 200 million) and Rs 1 crore (Rs 10 million), respectively, for Rajasthan and Andaman and Nicobar.

Trai has also received comments from stakeholders to include national long distance and international long distance and Internet services in the scope of unified license.

"The authority has already clarified that it is willing to consider all suggestions made in the process of consultations" the statement said.
