The teledensity level (telephone connections for every 100 people) in the country touched 8.02 at the end of September 2004, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.

The gross subscriber base, comprising both fixed and mobile connections, touched 86.79 million at the end of September. There were 42.97 million mobile subscribers, slightly lower than the 43.82 million fixed-line users at the end of the same month.

About 2 million telecom subscribers were added in September, of which 1.85 million were mobile subscribers. The sector had added about 1.87 million subscribers in August, including 1.67 million mobile subscribers.

Operators using the Global System for Mobiles platform dominated the market, adding 1.55 million subscribers, whereas the Code Division Multiple Access segment added 0.30 million subscribers.
