From banks and credit card firms to mobile operators, everyone is using the power of SMS to reach out to potential customers and now, even Telecom Disputes Settlement And Appellate Tribunal has jumped the SMS bandwagon.

The TDSAT is in the process of implementing a 'Mobile Alert System' to inform litigants and lawyers about their cases through SMS.

This system would help inform broadcasters and telecom firms a day prior to listing of their case in the tribunal. The tribunal has already placed a judicial notice for the purpose, requesting broadcasters and operators to register their mobile numbers in its registry.

The objective of providing this service is to increase transparency and help reduce the hassles faced by litigants in fighting their cases, a source in the tribunal said.

This is the first such
incidence where a court would be using SMS for giving information, he added.

However, this system would not be free. TDSAT would take a monthly charge of Rs 500 for any number of messages.

"Right now, we are negotiating with Airtel for providing this service. Their Kolkata division is likely to develop a software for this purpose," the source said.

TDSAT is among the few tribunals in the country, which regularly updates its website with daily causelist and orders.

The new software would work in tandem with TDSAT's portal. As soon as causelist is uploaded on the web site, the person concerned would get an SMS alert as well, the source said.
