The Tata Group is likely to sign a final agreement with Bangladesh's state-run Board of Investment for its proposed two billion dollar investment in the country soon, a media report said on Monday.

The agreement would be signed once Tata experts finish their feasibility study on setting up the proposed steel, power and fertiliser projects, it said.

Tata has set up a office in Dhaka recently to carry out its Bangladesh operations.

Ratan Tata, the Tata Group chairman, visited Bangladesh last year to sign 'expression of interest' for setting up three plants in Bangladesh-based on natural gas supply.

The Tata Group has proposed to set up a 700 million dollar plant in basic steel industry, an equal amount in a 1,000 megawatt power generation project and $600 million in a fertiliser factory.

If the plan gets through, it would be the largest single foreign investment ever in Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh government has sought funding from international donors for the pipeline project to provide natural gas and electricity in the country's western region for the Tata project.

According to available statistics, Tata Motors has so far put 20,000 commercial vehicles on the streets of Bangladesh, besides 1,700 Indica taxis.

Tata International outsourced leather worth $4.17 million in 2003-2004 from Bangladesh, it said.
