Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd, the Tata's international long-distance telephony operator, has decided to adopt the Tata Indicom brand.

The Tata group brass met in Mumbai on Tuesday and finally agreed to make Tata Indicom the umbrella brand for even international long-distance telephony.

With this, Tata Indicom will formally become the Tata group's national brand, offering not only voice and data products of Tata Teleservices for fixed-line services but also international long-distance and VSAT services.

VSNL and Tata group executives have been closely working with advertising agency RK Swamy to evaluate the VSNL brand alongside the recently launched Tata Indicom.

"After a long run, we have decided to offer all out end-to-end services, whether corporate or retail, under the Tata Indicom brand," Tata group sources said after the meeting.

In fact, the group unveiled the brand as a "national brand" for products offered by Tata Teleservices in November 2002.

However, the group had then not decided whether to extend the brand to VSNL, following the Rs 1,200 crore (Rs 120 billion) controversial investment in Tata Teleservices.

"Following several deliberations with the advertising company over the past few months, we have decided that Tata Indicom will be extended to even VSNL," group sources said.
