Nearly 45 per cent of the work had been completed on the plant, coming up with an investment of $56 million, Bipin

Datar, general manager (sales), Skoda Auto India Pvt Ltd, told reporters during the preview of the Skoda Superb, the latest car in its stable, being launched in India next February or March.

The new factory has been put up in place of the existing one in Aurangabad, which was functioning from a rented premise.

Czech carmaker Skoda assembled the first car and launched it in Delhi in November 2001, followed by another in Mumbai the same month. It has so far sold nearly 9,000 cars, both petrol and diesel, across India.

In the next months, the figure would cross the 10,000 mark, Datar said.

He said the company would explore the markets in Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan. However, the first priority would be to meet the demands of the 'fast growing' domestic market, he added.
