The Sensex opened 21 points higher at 13,950, and exhibited a firm trend through the day backed by steady buying in banking and select heavyweights.
The buying intensified towards the end, and the index rallied to a high of 14,159. The Sensex finally ended with a smart gain of 198 points at 14,127.
The BSE Bankex rallied 3% to 7413. The Oil & Gas index surged 1.5% to 7402, and the FMCG index advanced over 1% to 1839.
The market breadth was positive - out of 2,679 stocks traded, 1,626 advanced, 987 declined and 66 were unchanged today.
Banks lead once again
SBI soared nearly 5% to Rs 1,284. ICICI Bank rallied over 3% to Rs 919, and HDFC Bank added 2% to Rs 1,031.
Reliance Communications, BHEL and Tata Motors surged around 3% each to Rs 491, Rs 2,595 and Rs 735, respectively.
Hindalco moved up 2.5% to Rs 149. Reliance, Larsen & Toubro and HLL advanced over 2% each to Rs 1,634, Rs 1,711 and Rs 197, respectively.
Bharti Airtel was up nearly 2% at Rs 848. Bajaj Auto and HDFC gained 1.7% each at Rs 2,680 and Rs 1,698, respectively.
Wipro, Grasim, ONGC and Dr.Reddy's were up around 1% each at Rs 540, Rs 2,505, Rs 899 and Rs 663, respectively.
Hero Honda tumbled nearly 3% to Rs 678. Infosys and TCS slipped 1% each to Rs 1,952 and Rs 1,224, respectively.
Mallya label on W&M
United Spirits soared to a high of Rs 906 before settling with a gain of almost 7% at Rs 895 on news that Vijay Mallya has finally acquired Whyte & Mackay for £ 595 million. Around 2.70 lakh shares changed hands at the United Spirits counter as against its 2-week daily traded average volume of around 67,300 shares.
Most active counters
Unitech topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 225 crore followed by HDFC Bank (Rs 167.50 crore), SBI (Rs 153.40 crore), Reliance (Rs 125.90 crore) and Orbit Corp (Rs 104.10 crore).
Reliance Natural Resources led the volume chart with trades of around 2.44 crore shares followed by Nagarjuna Fertilisers (1.06 crore), Tata Teleservices (95.80 lakh), IFCI (65.67 lakh) and Petronet (65.65 lakh).
