The markets celebrated Independence Day and closed strong near its day's high backed by buying seen in oil & gas, auto and FMCG stocks.
The mid-cap and the small caps continued their northbound journey.
The Sensex closed at 11,312.99 up 121 points. The Nifty gained 39 points to close at 3,313.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 5,701.06 up 104 points or 1.8%.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 4,723.34 up 106 points or 2.3%.
Most of the BSE sectoral indices closed in the positive terrain.
The BSE Oil and Gas Index gained 1.98% at 5,307.64. MRPL, BPCL, Kochi Refinery, IOC and HPCL closed higher.
The BSE Auto Index gained 1.74% at 4,795.03. Sundaram-Clayto, Hind Motors, Bajaj Auto and MRF were among the top gainers.
The BSE FMCG Index was up 1.72% at 1,951.46. Nestle, McDowell, Colgate, HLL and ITC closed in green.
The BSE Health Care Index was up by 1.38% at 3,429.33. Biocon, Cipla, Wyeth, GlaxoSmithKline and Lupin closed higher.
The BSE Metal Index advanced by 1.12% at 8,254.86. Welspun Guj, Hind Zinc, JindalStainless, Jindal Saw and Sesa Goa witnessed buying interest.
The BSE IT Index was up by 0.95% at 4,178.77. Hexaware Tech, I-Flex Solution, Satyam, Moser Baer, Mphasis BFL and Wipro jumped.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 0.65% at 7,534.33. HEG, Thermax, Gammon India, Alstom Projects, Praj Industries and KEC Infrastructure closed higher.
The BSE Consumer Durables Index gained 0.48% at 2,979.94. Samtel Color, Su-Raj Diamonds, BPL and Blue Star were among gainers.
The BSE Bankex closed flat at 5,044.89. SBI, PNB and OBC moved upwards.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 5322.69 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 15632.39 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 2836.81 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 23791.89 crore.

Sensex @ 1411 hrs
The markets have gained further ground due to sustained buying in oil & gas, FMCG and auto stocks.
At 2.11 pm, the Sensex was up 109.46 points or 0.98% at 11,301.92, and the Nifty up 37.40 points or 1.14% at 3311.75.
About 1791 shares have advanced, 603 shares declined, and 47 shares are unchanged.
All BSE sectoral indices were trading in green.
The BSE midcap index was up 2.26% at 4,721.83.
The BSE oil & gas index has outperformed the other indices, followed by FMCG, auto, heath care and metal.
Major gainers on the indices were Bajaj Auto up 4.65%, Cipla up 2.73%, ITC up 1.85%, HPCL up 6.39% and BPCL up 6.38%.
Hero Honda down1.76%, ICICI Bank down 0.97% and HDFC Bank down 0.59% were the major loser on the indices.
Index heavyweight Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 227.15 up 1.88% from its previous close of Rs 222.95.
Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 1,029.25 up 1.8% from its previous close of Rs 1,011.10.
Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 1,752.00 up 0.56% from its previous close of Rs 1,742.25.
Sensex @ 1305 hrs
The markets are trading in green on the back of buying interest in midcap stocks. At 1.05 pm, the Sensex was up 88.75 points or 0.79% at 11281.21, and the Nifty up 30.00 points or 0.92% at 3304.35.
About 1718 shares have advanced, 591 shares declined, and 52 shares are unchanged.
All BSE sectoral indices were trading in green.
The BSE midcap index was up 2.09% at 4713.89 and the BSE small cap index was up 1.72% at 5692.90.
BSE auto, FMCG, healthcare and oil & gas indices were trading above 1%.
Biggest gainers on the indices were Bajaj Auto 3.33%, Cipla 3.09%, ONGC 1.99%, Satyam 1.94%, HPCL 6.19% and BPCL 4.58%.

Mahindra Gesco was quoting at Rs 727.90, up Rs 109.35, or 17.68%.
Mercator Lines was quoting at Rs 39.10, up Rs 5.55, or 16.54%.
Raymond was quoting at Rs 444.00, up Rs 50.85, or 12.93%.
UB Holdings was quoting at Rs 223.45, up Rs 20.30, or 9.99%.
BSE smallcap gainers:
Grindwell Norton was quoting at Rs 139.00, up Rs 20.75, or 17.55%.
Aarvee Denim and Exports was quoting at Rs 57.75, up Rs 6.65, or 13.01%.
Datamatics Technologies was quoting at Rs 56.50, up Rs 6.65, or 13.34%.
Heritage Foods was quoting at Rs 141.05, up Rs 14.05, or 11.06%.

The markets are trading strong due to increased buying interest in index pivotals. At 12.13 pm IST, the Sensex is up 100.34 points or 0.90% at 11292.8, and the Nifty up 33.30 points or 1.02% at 3307.65.
About 1680 shares have advanced, 517 shares declined, and 58 shares are unchanged.
Oil and gas and auto stocks are among the top gainers; one reason being the oil prices slipping below USD 74 mark.
Top gainers on the Sensex are Cipla up 2.36%, ONGC up 2.02%, Bajaj Auto up 2.01% .
Top gainers on the Nifty are HPCL up 5.56%, BPCL up 3.85%, Jet Airways up 2.40%
Top losers on the indices are Hero Honda, L&T, Hindalco and Suzlon Energy.
Index heavyweight Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 227.80 up 2.18% from its previous close of Rs 222.95.
Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 1,024.60 up 1.34% from its previous close of Rs 1,011.10.
Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 1,756.10 up 0.79% from its previous close of Rs 1,742.25.
Cigarette major ITC was trading at Rs 177.35 up 1% from its previous close of Rs 175.60.

The markets are stable and continue to trade in the green as buying is seen in select index pivotals.
At 11.02 am IST, the Sensex is up 46.20 points or 0.41% at 11,238.66, and the Nifty up 19.50 points or 0.60% at 3293.85.
About 1407 shares have advanced, 488 shares declined, and 58 shares are unchanged.
Top gainers on the Sensex are Reliance Energy up 1.35%, Tata Steel up 1.31% and Cipla up 1.10%.
Top gainers on the Nifty are Jet Airways up 2.67%, Siemens up 2.17% and Reliance Energy up 1.51%.

Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 1,016.85 up 0.57% from its previous close of Rs 1,011.10.
Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 1,741.85 down 0.02% from its previous close of Rs 1,742.25.
Cigarette major ITC was trading at Rs 176.80 up 0.68% from its previous close of Rs 175.60.
Refinery major HPCL was trading at Rs 224.55 up 0.79% from its previous close of Rs 222.80.
Sensex @ 09:57 hrs
The markets have opened on positive note. At 9:57 am, the Sensex was up 81 points at 11274. The Nifty was up 17 points 3291.
The CNX Midcap was up 44 points at 4186.
Tata Steel, Bharti, Wipro, Hindalco, Nalco, PNB, Satyam, SAIL, ABB, BPCL, Bajaj Auto, ITC, TCS, Rel Comm, NTPC, ICICI Bank, SBI, ONGC, GSK Pharma, HDFC, HPCL, Zee, Cipla, HCL Tech and GAIL are trading higher.
Asian markets were trading higher. Japan Nikkei's share average surged 250.32 points or 1.61% at 15,815.34. It earlier rose as high as 15,837.23, its highest intraday level since May 30.
FIIs were net buyers of $32.7 million and MFs net buyers of Rs 22.5 crore (Rs 225 million) in equity on August 10.
Wall Street ended down on fears of economic slowdown; the Dow Jones industrial average fell 36.34 points, or 0.33% , to 11,088.03.
