The Sensex, which, scaled a new summit of 10,305, pared gains towards the close and finally finished with a marginal gain of 20 points at 10,244.
The Nifty gained 11 points to close at 3,062.
Bajaj Auto touched an intra-day high of Rs 2,693, but finally ended with a 3.1% at Rs 2,622. HLL surged to a high of Rs 252, before settling with a gain of 2.9% at Rs 248.
Tata Steel and ONGC spurted 2% each to Rs 419 and Rs 1,197, respectively.
NTPC (Rs 132), ITC (Rs 166) and Satyam (Rs 781) were up 1.5% each. Wipro gained 1% at Rs 521.
Ranbaxy dropped 2.6% to Rs 451. Grasim shed 2.5% to Rs 1,634.
Hindalco (Rs 154), SBI (Rs 853), Gujarat Ambuja (Rs 84.75) and ICICI Bank (Rs 586) declined around 1.5% each. BHEL slipped 1% to Rs 1,894.
