Sensex sheds 40 pts; tech stocks decline

The Sensex closed 40 points lower at 5,718. The Nifty shed 10 points to close at 1,808. 

Reliance declined over a per cent (Rs 7) to Rs 547. ITC shed Rs 10 to Rs 1,106. HLL finished flat at Rs 128.

Satyam and Wipro were down a per cent each at Rs 388 and Rs 630, respectively. Infosys closed Rs 15 lower at Rs 1,685.  ONGC moved up Rs 6 to Rs 806. HPCL slipped a per cent (Rs 4) to Rs 323. 

ICICI Bank slumped over 2% (Rs 6) to Rs 286, and SBI declined 1.7% (Rs 8) to Rs 480. HDFC Bank, however, closed a rupee higher at Rs 408. 

HDFC advanced 1.9% (Rs 13) to Rs 684.  Hindalco was down 1.2% (Rs 17) at Rs 1,350. Tisco ended a tad lower at Rs 300. 

Tata Motors tumbled 2.2% (Rs 9) to Rs 415. Maruti slipped 1.5% (Rs 6) to Rs 360, and Hero Honda lost a per cent at Rs 430. Bajaj Auto ended Rs 7 lower at Rs 1,009. 

Cement stocks came-off their day's high and finished the day with gains. Gujarat Ambuja rallied 1.7% (Rs 6) to Rs 364. Grasim spurted Rs 5 to Rs 1,176, and ACC gained Rs 2 at Rs 276. 

Pharma stocks witnessed heavy selling towards the close. Ranbaxy plunged 1.7% (Rs 19) to Rs 1,063. Dr Reddy's declined 1.3% (Rs 10) to Rs 762, and Cipla was down a rupee at Rs 289.  

Tata Power dropped 2.2% (Rs 7) to Rs 322, and Reliance Energy shed Rs 6 to Rs 659.  While Bharti Tele rallied 2.2% (Rs 3) to Rs 157, Zee lost a per cent (Rs 2) at Rs 158

Sensex @ 1530 hrs

The Sensex has slumped 37 points to 5,721. The Nifty has declined eight points at 1,810.

Infosys and Satyam have declined a per cent each to Rs 1,683 and Rs 389, respectively. Wipro is down Rs 5 at Rs 632.

Reliance has shed Rs 4 at Rs 549, and ITC is down Rs 7 at Rs 1,109. HLL is unchanged at Rs 128.  ONGC is up Rs 5 at Rs 805. HPCL, however, has slipped a per cent (Rs 3) to Rs 324.

ICICI Bank has slumped 2% (Rs 6) to Rs 287, and SBI is down Rs 7 at Rs 482. HDFC Bank, however, is up Rs 3 at Rs 410.

Cement stocks have come off their day's high. Grasim and Gujarat Ambuja are up Rs 7 each at Rs 1,178 and Rs 365, respectively. ACC is up Rs 3 at Rs 277.

Sensex @ 1400 hrs

The Sensex has moved up 21 points to 5,779. The Nifty is at 1,827 - up nine points. 

Wipro is up Rs 3 at Rs 640, and Infosys has moved down Rs 7 to Rs 1,693. Satyam is unchanged at Rs 393. 

Reliance is up Rs 2 at Rs 555. HLL and ITC are flat at Rs 128 and Rs 1,116, respectively. 

ONGC has soared 1.7% (Rs 14) to Rs 814. 

Gujarat Ambuja is up nearly 3% (Rs 10) at Rs 368. ACC and Grasim have gained 1.7% each at Rs 279 and Rs 1,191, respectively.

HDFC has advanced 1.4% (Rs 10) to Rs 681.  Bhel is down a per cent (Rs 7) at Rs 616.  Bharti Tele is steady at Rs 158.

Titan, BASF India, Syngenta and Saw Pipes are the major gainers having gained 4-6% each. Ingersoll Rand, Maharashtra Seamless, India Cement, Escorts, Jindal Iron & Steel, Indo Gulf, HMT, Wockhardt Life, Punjab Tractors, Balaji Tele, Jindal Steel and Chennai Petro are up 2-3% each.

MphasiS BFL is down 5.5% (Rs 18) at Rs 308. LIC Housing Finance, Hinduja TMT, Orchid Chemicals, Novartis, Nicholas Pharma, Siemens, EIH, Pidilite, HCL Infosys, Neyveli Lignite, Birla Corporation, Ashok Leyland, VisualSoft, Century Enka, Indian Hotels, Pfizer, Container Corporation and Allahabad Bank have declined 1-2% each.

Sensex @ 1315 hrs

The Sensex is up eight points at 5,766, and the Nifty is at 1,824 - up six points.

While Wipro is steady at Rs 640, Infosys has slipped Rs 5 to Rs 1,694. Satyam, however, is unchanged at Rs 392.

ITC is moved down Rs 8 to Rs 1,109. HLL and Reliance are steady at Rs 128 and Rs 555, respectively.

While Tisco is firm at Rs 304, Hindalco has moved down Rs 6 to Rs 1,360.

Gujarat Ambuja has rallied nearly 3% (Rs 10) to Rs 368. ACC has spurted 2% (Rs 6) to Rs 279, and Grasim have surged 1.7% (Rs 20) to Rs 1,191.

HDFC has advanced over a per cent (Rs 8) to Rs 679.  Bhel has dropped 1.3% (Rs 8) to Rs 615.  Ranbaxy has declined Rs 8 at Rs 1,073. While Cipla is up a rupee at Rs 291, Dr Reddy's is down a rupee at Rs 771.

Bharti Tele has zoomed over 3% (Rs 5) to Rs 158. Zee is down a rupee at Rs 158.

Sensex @ 1300 hrs

The Sensex has moved up 16 points to 5,774. The Nifty is at 1,822 - up four points.

Wipro is steady at Rs 640. Infosys and Satyam are unchanged at Rs 1,699 and Rs 392, respectively.

ITC is down Rs 6 at Rs 1,110. While Reliance has moved up Rs 2 to Rs 555, HLL is still trading flat at Rs 128.

ONGC has soared a per cent (Rs 9) to Rs 809. HPCL, however, is down Rs 2 at Rs 325.

Tisco is firm with a gain of a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 304. Hindalco is down Rs 4 at Rs 1,362.

Cement stocks have extended gains. Gujarat Ambuja has rallied 2.6% (Rs 9) to Rs 367. ACC and Grasim have surged 1.7% each to Rs 278 and Rs 1,189, respectively.

Bharti Tele has zoomed 3.6% (Rs 6) to Rs 159 owing to fresh buying at the counter.

The BSE Metal index has moved up 0.9% to 5,302. While the BSE BANKEX, TECk and PSU indices are still holding gains at 2,807, 1,483 and 3,756, respectively, the BSE Auto, FMCG and Health Care indices have come off their lows but are still in red at 2,406, 918 and 2,580, respectively.

LIC Housing Finance is topping the volume chart on the BSE, and the counter has clocked a volume of around 33.70 lakh shares so far. SAIL (30.44 lakh), Ispat Industries (10.51 lakh), Tisco (10.15 lakh) and Ashok Leyland (8.8 lakh) have also logged good volumes.

LIC Housing Finance, also, tops the value chart with a turnover of Rs 47.68 crore so far on the BSE. It is followed by Tisco (Rs 30.81 crore), Reliance (Rs 27.57 crore), Satyam (Rs 27.47 crore) and TCS (Rs 26.42 crore).

Sensex @ 1200 hrs

The Sensex has pared most of its gains and is now up five points at 5,763.

The Nifty is at 1,821 - up three points.

Infosys and Satyam are down a rupee each at Rs 1,699 and Rs 392, respectively. Wipro, however, is unchanged at Rs 641.

ITC has slipped Rs 7 to Rs 1,109. HLL and Reliance are trading flat at Rs 128 and Rs 554, respectively.  While ONGC has gained Rs 6 at Rs 806, HPCL is down Rs 3 to Rs 325.

Tisco is up a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 304. Hindalco has declined Rs 4 to Rs 1,363.

Cement stocks are witnessing fresh buying. Gujarat Ambuja has rallied 2% (Rs 7) to Rs 365. ACC and Grasim are up a per cent each at Rs 276 and Rs 1,182, respectively.

Cipla is firm at Rs 293. While Dr Reddy's is down Rs 2 to Rs 771, Ranbaxy has declined Rs 8 to Rs 1,073.  Reliance Energy is down a per cent (Rs 6) to Rs 660, and Tata Power has shed Rs 2 to Rs 327.

The BSE Metal index is up 0.7% at 5,292. While the BSE BANKEX, TECk and PSU indices are marginally up at 2,805, 1,481 and 3,747, respectively, the BSE Auto, FMCG and Health Care indices have slipped into negative zones to 2,404, 917 and 2,578, respectively.

Titan has zoomed 6.7% (Rs 10) to Rs 167. BASF India has rallied nearly 5% (Rs 7) to Rs 148. India Cement, Info Gulf, Escorts, Punjab Tractors, RCF, Nirma, Wockhardt Life, Chennai Petro, Jindal Iron & Steel, Tata Infotech, SKF India, Balaji Tele, Century Textiles, Ispat Industries, Sterlite Industries and Maharashtra Seamless are up 1-3% each.

Mphasis BFL has plunged over 6% (Rs 21) to Rs 305. Century Enka, LIC Housing Finance, Hinduja TMT, Birla Corporation, Orchid Chemicals, Siemens, Novartis, Videocon International, Nicholas Pharma, ICI India, HCL Infosys and Hexaware are down 1-2% each.

Sensex at 1100 hrs

The Sensex opened 7 points higher at 5,765. Fresh buying in the early morning deals led the index rally to an intra-day high of 5,792. The index is now up 16 points at 5,774.

The Nifty has gained four points at 1,822.

Infosys is up Rs 8 at Rs 1,708, and Wipro has gained Rs 2 at Rs 639. Satyam, however, is down a rupee at Rs 392.

Disappointing Q2 numbers by Mphasis BFL, sent the stock crashing 6% to a low of Rs 304. The scrip is now down 5.7% (Rs 18) at Rs 307 with a volume of around 1.4 lakh shares so far on the BSE.

Reliance has moved up Rs 3 to Rs 557. While ITC is down a rupee at Rs 1,115, HLL is unchanged at Rs 129.

ICICI Bank has advanced Rs 3 to Rs 295, and HDFC Bank is up a rupee at Rs 408. However, SBI is trading flat at Rs 488.  While ONGC has gained Rs 6 at Rs 806, HPCL is down a rupee at Rs 326.

Tisco has spurted a per cent (Rs 4) to Rs 304. Hindalco is flat at Rs 1,366.  Bajaj Auto, Hero Honda, Maruti and Tata Motors are all up Rs 2 each at Rs 1,018, Rs 437, Rs 368 and Rs 427, respectively.

Grasim has spurted Rs 7 to Rs 1,177. Gujarat Ambuja is up Rs 3 at Rs 361, and ACC has added Rs 2 at Rs 276.  Cipla has gained a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 293. However, Dr Reddy's and Ranbaxy are trading almost flat at Rs 772 and Rs 1,081, respectively. Bharti Tele has rallied 1.6% to Rs 156. Zee is marginally up at Rs 160.

Sensex @ 1015 hrs

The BSE Sensex is ruling at 5,781 points, up 23 points.

The NSE Nifty opened unchanged at 1,818. It soon rallied to an intra-day high of 1,828, and is now up 10 points at 1,827.

Reliance is up Rs 2 at Rs 556. While HLL is up a rupee at Rs 129, ITC is flat at Rs 1,117.

Infosys has gained Rs 13 at Rs 1,712. Wipro is up Rs 2 at Rs 639, and Satyam is down a rupee at Rs 392.

Bharti Tele, Tata Chemicals, MTNL, Tisco, HCL Technologies, SAIL, SCI and ONGC have posted smart gains in the early deals.
