The Sensex, after displaying a volatile trend during the intra-day trades, ended with a sharp surge of 65 points at 5,528 on strong buying in heavyweight, tech, power and other select old economy stocks. The Nifty also bounced back from the yesterday's losses, and gained 28 points to close at 1,728.
Reliance spurted 3.61% (Rs 18) to Rs 514. HLL jumped 3.25% (Rs 4) to Rs 124, and ITC clocked a per cent gain (Rs 10) to close at Rs 1,138.
Infosys mopped up 1.76% gains (Rs 28) to Rs 1,640. While Wipro moved up 2.26% (Rs 13) to Rs 584, Satyam (up Rs 8 or 2.27% to Rs 374)
ONGC added 1.74% (Rs 13) to Rs 747. HPCL ended with a modest gain of Rs 2 at Rs 319.
SBI ended marginally over a per cent gain (Rs 6) at Rs 473.
Tata Power advanced 3.16% (Rs 10) to Rs 312. While BHEL moved up 1.86% (Rs 11) to Rs 576, Reliance Energy was up a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 636.
Hindalco logged 1.46% gains (Rs 19) to Rs 1,313, and Tisco surged 2.64% (Rs 7) to Rs 290.
Auto, cement and pharma stocks, however, ended on a divergent note today.
