Sensex down 9 points at close

The Sensex, which slipped into the red in afternoon trades, lost nine points to close at 5,420 on selling pressure in tech, auto and other select old economy stocks. The Nifty was down 2 points at 1,683.

Wipro tumbled 2% (Rs 12) to Rs 589. Satyam declined 1.73% (Rs 7) to Rs 383. Infosys, after a mixed outing closed with a modest gain of Rs 4 at Rs 1,702.

Hero Honda lost 1.40% (Rs 6) to Rs 456. While Tata Motors dipped 1.15% (Rs 4) to Rs 386, Maruti closed down a tad at Rs 354. Bajaj, however, clocked a per cent gain (Rs 8) to close at Rs 924.

HDFC crashed 3.62% (Rs 23) to Rs 614 on heavy selling pressure. HPCL was the another major amongst the index stocks, and dropped 2.71% (Rs 9) to Rs 320. Bharti slipped into the red in afternoon trades, and lost 2% (Rs 3) to close at Rs 143.

Tata Power was down 1.34% (Rs 4) at Rs 284. Reliance Energy, after intial gains, also eased on selling pressure to finish down Rs 2 at Rs 627. BHEL, however, moved up nearly 2% (Rs 11) to Rs 589.

Ranbaxy shed 1.69% (Rs 18) to Rs 1,075. While Cipla closed down a tad at Rs 271,

Dr. Reddy's ended with a rupee gain at Rs 751.

HLL attracted decent buying support, and advanced nearly 3% (Rs 4) to Rs 123. Reliance was up a mere Rs 2 at Rs 488. ITC added Rs 4 to Rs 1,091.
