The Sensex on Wednesday closed with a gain of 89 points at 4,924. The Nifty moved up 27 points to end at 1,535.
Following yesterday's positive close, the Sensex today opened with a positive gap of 11 points at 4,846.
While 23 Sensex stocks advanced, seven declined today.
MTNL flared up 5% (Rs 6) to close at Rs 123. ONGC surged 4.67% (Rs 29) to Rs 657. BHEL moved up 4.49% (Rs 19) to Rs 444. HPCL added 2.95% (Rs 9) to Rs 330. SBI was up a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 473.
ICICI Bank surged 10.61% (Rs 25) to close the day at Rs 262. Reliance Energy zoomed 8.76% (Rs 43) to Rs 538. Hindalco notched up 4.81% gains (Rs 45) to close at Rs 980.
Tisco jumped nearly 3% (Rs 9) to Rs 311. Bharti ended with a steady gain of 2% (Rs 3) at Rs 141. Tata Power, however, witnessed strong selling in its counter, and slumped 6.59% (Rs 17) to Rs 247.
Infosys clocked a per cent gain (Rs 53) to Rs 5,340. While Satyam gained 1.35% (Rs 4) to Rs 318, Wipro ended marginally higher at Rs 1,529.
Reliance moved up 1.27% (Rs 5) to Rs 440. HLL closed up a tad at Rs 137. ITC was down a rupee at Rs 910.
Gujarat Ambuja advanced 4.26% (Rs 12) to Rs 299. ACC gained 2% (Rs 5) to Rs 250. Grasim ended with a loss of 1.43% (Rs 16) at Rs 1,085.
Hero Honda spurted 3.40% (Rs 16) to Rs 478. Maruti lost 2.57% (Rs 10) to Rs 392. Tata Motors was marginally down by Rs 2 at Rs 393.
