The Sensex on Friday opened with a loss of 10 points at 4,922. It dropped more than 100 points to touch an intra-day low of 4,805 following sharp selling in old and new economy counters.
The index bounced back into the green during the mid-noon trades following buying in select heavyweight, PSU, cement, tech and auto majors.
The Sensex closed with a gain of 29 points at 4,961. The Nifty also added 16 points to end at 1,560.
While 16 Sensex stocks advanced, 14 declined today.
ONGC gained 3.51% (Rs 24) to close at Rs 707. HPCL added 2.94% (Rs 9) to Rs 333. SBI and MTNL ended marginally higher at Rs 515 and Rs 126, respectively. BHEL, however, lost 2.22% (Rs 10) to Rs 453.
ITC moved up 1.19% (Rs 11) to Rs 890. While HLL was up a rupee at Rs 138, Reliance finished lower by Rs 3 at Rs 439.
Grasim rose 4.23% (Rs 43) to Rs 1,071. While Gujarat Ambuja added 1.83% (Rs 5) to Rs 298, ACC closed down a rupee at Rs 255.
HDFC spurted 4.80% (Rs 27) to Rs 585. While HDFC Bank gained 2% (Rs 7) to Rs 362, ICICI Bank moved up 1.91% (Rs 5) to Rs 267. Tisco advanced 2.54% (Rs 8) to Rs 329.
Infosys shed Rs 21 to close at Rs 4,904. Satyam was down a rupee at Rs 303. Wipro, however, attracted buying support to end with a gain of 2.35% (Rs 35) at Rs 1,509.
Tata Power slumped 6% (Rs 19) to close at Rs 293. Zee also witnessed selling pressure in its counter, and dropped 3.39% (Rs 4) to Rs 118.
Hero Honda added 1.32% (Rs 6) to Rs 456. Bajaj was marginally up by Rs 2 at Rs 866. Maruti, however, ended 1.66% lower (Rs 8) at Rs 464. Tata Motors was also weak at Rs 420 - down Rs 2.
