The Sensex on Tuesday opened 12 points lower at 5,923. The markets failed to recover from its early lows and remained bearish throughout the session. While the index exhibited weakness in the opening session, unabated selling pressure across-the-board in early noon deals saw it slip below the 5,800-mark to touch a low of 5,795.
The Sensex, on the back of selective buying in select PSUs and pharma stocks, pared losses towards the fag-end, and ended with a loss of 85 points at 5,851.
The Nifty lost 19 points to close at 1,866.
Reliance shed 2.25% (Rs 13) to close at Rs 583. While ITC slipped a per cent (Rs 9) to Rs 1,168, HLL was down 1.44% (Rs 2) at Rs 154.
SBI added Rs 6 to Rs 634. While BHEL ended off-highs with a marginal gain of Rs 3 at Rs 628, MTNL closed up a rupee at Rs 145. HPCL ended with a loss of 3.55% (Rs 19) at Rs 511.
Infosys shed 2.70% (Rs 138) to close at Rs 4,970. While Satyam lost 1.55% (Rs 5) to Rs 298, Wipro was down a per cent (Rs 12) at Rs 1,429.
Grasim came under relentless selling presure, and slumped 4.50% (Rs 55) to Rs 1,170. L&T (down Rs 14 or 2.35% to Rs 591) and ACC (down Rs 5 or 1.87% to Rs 272) also tumbled on sharp correction. Gujarat Ambuja ended down a rupee at Rs 321 -- coming off from a low of Rs 310.
Tata Motors dropped 2.78% (Rs 15) to Rs 520. While Hero Honda dipped 1.56% (Rs 8) to Rs 530, Bajaj lost 1.51%% (Rs 14) to close at Rs 909.
Dr. Reddy's bounced from a low of Rs 1,047 to end 1.77% higher (Rs 18) at Rs 1,046. Ranbaxy, too, shrugged off its losses on buying support to end with a per cent gain (Rs 9) at Rs 991. Cipla, however, was down a per cent (Rs 8) at Rs 1,237.
Hindalco (down Rs 20 or 1.54% to Rs 1,288), ONGC (down Rs 13 or 1.56% to Rs 838), Tata Power (down Rs 7 to Rs 399) and Tisco (down Rs 8 or 1.77% to Rs 442) ended with losses. Zee plunged 4.54% (Rs 6) to Rs 123. HDFC and HDFC Bank were down a per cent each at Rs 627 (down Rs 9) and Rs 374 (down Rs 5), respectively.
