The Sensex opened seven points up at 6,019. The index slipped into the red in early deals to touch a low of 5,999, but recovered soon on selective gains and remained range-bound till early noon deals. The afternoon session saw the markets bolstered by renewed buying in heavyweights, techs, select PSUs and cement stocks, which saw the index spurt to an intra-day high of 6,059.
Profit-taking, however, emerged in most of the counters at close, which saw the Sensex shed some gains to finally end at 6,036 - up 23 points.
The Nifty added six points to close at 1,920.
Reliance clocked a per cent gain (Rs 5) to close at Rs 598. ITC pared gains on profit-taking to end with a marginal gain of Rs 3 at Rs 1,072.
HLL dropped 3.33% (Rs 7) to Rs 193. The FMCG major reported a 3% rise in Q4 net at Rs 494.72 crore as against Rs 480.57 crore in Q4FY02, and a net profit of Rs 1,771.79 crore for the year ended Decemeber 31, 2003 as against Rs 1,769.74 crore in FY02.
Grasim witnessed strong buying support in its counter, and shot up 4.55% (Rs 52) to close at Rs 1,188. While L&T advanced 1.45% (Rs 8) to Rs 557, Gujarat Ambuja added a per cent (Rs 3) to Rs 310. ACC closed up a rupee at Rs 273.
Infosys moved up a per cent (Rs 51) to Rs 5,401. Satyam (up Rs 4 1.32% to Rs 341) ended with steady gains. Wipro, however, slipped from higher levels to finish down a per cent (Rs 9) at Rs 1,607.
BHEL added 1.54% (Rs 9) to close at Rs 623. SBI ended in the green at Rs 632 - up Rs 3. HPCL, however, was down a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 475. MTNL closed down a rupee at Rs 139.
ICICI Bank logged 2.20% gains (Rs 7) to Rs 316. HDFC and HDFC Bank ended with marginal gains at Rs 661 (up Rs 2) and Rs 380 (up a rupee), respectively. Bharti Tele closed up a rupee at Rs 159. Tisco rose 2.21% (Rs 10) to Rs 454.
Bajaj incurred losses on selling pressure to end 1.69% lower (Rs 17) at Rs 992. While Hero Honda was down a per cent (Rs 5) at Rs 498, Tata Motors closed down a tad at Rs 559.
Dr. Reddy's and Cipla ended with marginal losses at Rs 1,239 and Rs 1,218, respectively. Ranbaxy, however, ended up Rs 2 at Rs 1,001.
ONGC and BSES slipped a per cent each to Rs 717 (down Rs 11) and Rs 663 (down Rs 5), respectively. Zee also in the red with a loss of 1.43% (Rs 2) at Rs 155.
Sensex @ 1445 hrs
The markets, which rose sharply in early noon deals, has slightly come off from higher levels owing to profit-taking in select stocks. The Sensex is now up 25 points at 6,037. The Nifty, too, has minimised its gains from its firm trend in early noon deals, and is up five points at 1,919.
ITC has edged higher by 1.55% (Rs 17) to Rs 1,085. Reliance is up 1.41% (Rs 8) at Rs 601.
HLL, which reported a 3% rise in Q4 net at Rs 494.72 crore, and a net profit of Rs 1,771.79 crore for the year ended Decemeber 31, 2003, has lost 2.83% (Rs 6) to Rs 194.
BHEL is trading with a per cent gain (Rs 4) at Rs 618. While SBI has added Rs 4 to Rs 633, MTNL is up a tad at Rs 140. HPCL, however, has inched lower by a per cent (Rs 4) to Rs 474.
Grasim is trading firm with a gain of 3.82% (Rs 43) at Rs 1,180. L&T has recovered from its losses on buying support, and is up 1.47% (Rs 8) at Rs 557. Gujarat Ambuja and ACC are trading marginally higher each at Rs 310 and Rs 273, respectively.
Infosys has slightly come off higher levels on profit-taking, and is up a per cent (Rs 36) at Rs 5,386. Satyam is up a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 339. Wipro, however, has succumbed to losses at Rs 1,599 - down Rs 17.
Hindalco has scaled up 1.16% (Rs 16) to Rs 1,362. HDFC has drifted into the green at Rs 667 - up Rs 7. While ICICI Bank is up 1.57% (Rs 5) at Rs 314, Tisco has gained 2% (Rs 9) to Rs 453.
Hero Honda has slipped further by 2% (Rs 10) to Rs 494. Bajaj has extended its losses by 1.87% (Rs 19) to Rs 990. Tata Motors, however, is up a rupee at Rs 560.
Cipla and Ranbaxy are up with modest gains at Rs 1,227 and Rs 1,001, respectively. Dr. Reddy's, however, has shed 1.30% (Rs 16) to Rs 1,223.
BSES (down Rs 7 or 1.12% to Rs 661) continue to dispaly weak trends. Bharti Tele is down 1.61% (Rs 3) at Rs 155. Tata Power has slipped into the red with a rupee loss at Rs 393. Zee has dipped 1.66% (Rs 3) to Rs 154.

The market has gained more ground in early noon deals as buying continues in heavyweights, PSUs, cement, tech and other select old economy counters. The Sensex has advanced 43 points to 6,055. The Nifty, too, has steadily upped its gains by eight points to 1,922.
Reliance continues to attract buying support, and has advanced 1.88% (Rs 11) to Rs 603. While ITC has added 1.16% (Rs 12) to Rs 1,081, HLL is up a rupee at Rs 200.
BHEL has moved up 1.28% (Rs 8) to Rs 622. SBI and MTNL are up a rupee each at Rs 630 and Rs 140, respectively. HPCL, however, is still down a rupee at Rs 477.
Infosys is trading firm with a gain of 1.10% (Rs 59) at Rs 5,409. Satyam (up Rs 4 to Rs 341) and Wipro (up Rs 3 to Rs 1,619) are still trading with marginal gains.

The market mood is slowly appearing optimistic as renewed buying has emerged in Reliance, ITC, Infosys, Grasim and other select old economy counters. Auto and pharma counters continue to witness sluggish trading on the back of a weak opening.
The Sensex has upped its gains by 18 points to 6,031. The Nifty, too, has bounced from its lows, and is up two points at 1,916.
Reliance has clocked a per cent gain (Rs 5) to Rs 597. ITC has moved up 1.60% (Rs 17) to Rs 1,086. HLL, however, is still down a rupee at Rs 199.
Infosys has upped its gains by a per cent (Rs 50) to Rs 5,400. Satyam (up Rs 3 to Rs 339) and Wipro (up a rupee to Rs 1,617) are trading marginally higher.
Grasim has accelerated by 3.64% (Rs 41) to Rs 1,178 on sustained buying support. Gujarat Ambuja (up Rs 2 to Rs 309) is trading with steady gains. L&T and ACC are still trading at lower levels at Rs 544 (down Rs 5) and Rs 272, respectively.
Hindalco is up a per cent (Rs 11) at Rs 1,358. Tisco and Tata power are up with marginal gains at Rs 449 and Rs 395, respectively.
BHEL and MTNL, however, are still marginally up at Rs 614 and Rs 140, respectively. SBI and HPCL also are trading in the red with marginal losses at Rs 627 and Rs 477, respectively.
Bajaj, Tata Motors and Hero Honda continue to trade on a sluggish note at Rs 998 (down Rs 11), Rs 554 (down Rs 5) and Rs 497 (down Rs 7), respectively.

Lacklustre trading in old and new economy stocks has seen the index display range-bound trend. The Sensex has hardly changed from its previous gains, and is up seven points at 6,019. The Nifty is down a point at 1,913.
Infosys has registered a per cent gain (Rs 39) to Rs 5,389. While Satyam has inched up by Rs 3 to Rs 339, Wipro is trading a tad higher at Rs 1,617.
ITC is up Rs 5 at Rs 1,074. Reliance is up a rupee at Rs 594. HLL, however, is down a rupee at Rs 199.
Grasim has garnered 3.11% gains (Rs 35) to Rs 1,172 on sustained buying support. Gujarat Ambuja and ACC are up with steady gains at Rs 309 and Rs 272, respectively. L&T, however, is still trading at lower levels, and is down 1.17% (Rs 6) at Rs 542.
Hindalco has slightly come off from higher levels, and is up a per cent (Rs 10) at Rs 1,357. ICICI Bank is up 2% (Rs 6) at Rs 315. Tisco and Tata Power are uchanged with modest gains at Rs 448 (up Rs 4) and Rs 395 (up a rupee), respectively.
BHEL is down a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 610. SBI (down Rs 2 to Rs 628) and HPCL (down Rs 2 to Rs 476) are still trading with marginal losses. MTNL is still trading with a rupee gain at Rs 140.

Dr. Reddy's has slipped into the red with a loss of Rs 5 at Rs 1,234. Ranbaxy is marginally down by Rs 3 at Rs 996. Cipla, however, is trading with a per cent gain (Rs 9) at Rs 1,229.
Bharti Tele has shed 2.28% (Rs 4) to Rs 154. HDFC and HDFC are weaker by a per cent each at Rs 651 (down Rs 8) and Rs 375 (down Rs 4), respectively. ONGC is trading a per cent lower (Rs 5) at Rs 722.
