The market was extreme volatile today, as the index, which opened lower with a gap of 12 points at 5,981, rebounded into the green in mid-morning deals on selective gains, and moved past the 6,000 mark to touch a high of 6,031.
While profit-taking emerged in early noon deals, the markets witnessed a steep fall towards the closing hours as unabated selling pressure across the board dragged the index below the 5,850 levels to a low of 5,815.
After moving in an intra-day range of 216 points, the Sensex pared losses on selective gains towards the fag-end, and finished with a loss of 117 points at 5,876.
The Nifty ended below the 1,900 levels with a loss of 42 points at 1,863.
ITC declined 3.11% (Rs 33) to Rs 1,018. While HLL slipped 4.41% (Rs 9) to Rs 193, Reliance ended with a loss of Rs 3 at Rs 578.
SBI (down Rs 16 or 2.44% to Rs 633), BHEL (down Rs 14 or 2.34% to Rs 571) and MTNL (down Rs 6 or 4% to Rs 133) witnessed relentless selling pressure. HPCL, however, was up Rs 2 at Rs 446.
Infosys ended 2.74% lower (Rs 153) at Rs 5,438. While Wipro shed 4.44% (Rs 77) to Rs 1,657, Satyam lost 2% (Rs 7) to Rs 335.
Hindalco at Rs 1,249 (down Rs 73 or 5.53%), ONGC at Rs 775 (down Rs 36 or 4.48%), BSES at Rs 536 (down Rs 23 or 4.16%) and ICICI Bank at Rs 294 (down Rs 11 or 3.74%) ended with steep losses. Zee, however, closed up a rupee at Rs 161.
Bharti Tele, which appreciated in yesterday's bullish trend, remained bearish through the session, and lost 5.18% (Rs 8) to Rs 140.
Tata Power dropped 4.39% (Rs 18) to Rs 391. Tisco ended 1.52% lower (Rs 7) at Rs 437.
L&T slumped 4.13% (Rs 23) to Rs 529. While Gujarat Ambuja and ACC were down Rs 2 each at Rs 300 and Rs 259 respectively, Grasim lost Rs 4 to Rs 1,115.
Tata Motors attracted buying support, and moved up 1.58% (Rs 8) to Rs 518. Bajaj closed up a tad at Rs 1,000. Hero Honda, however, was down 1.34% (Rs 6) at Rs 459.
Dr. Reddy's and Cipla ended with marginal gains at Rs 1,433 (up Rs 3) and Rs 1,277 (up a rupee), respectively. Ranbaxy, however, ended with a loss of 1.97% (Rs 20) at Rs 1,004.
HDFC, in a sluggish market, emerged as a major gainer amongst the index-based stocks, and jumped 5.50% (Rs 34) to Rs 655. HDFC Bank, however, declined 1.65% (Rs 6) to Rs 361.
