Sensex surges 176 points at close

The Sensex on Tuesday opened with a positive gap of 37 points at 5,854, but slipped immediately below the 5,800 levels to the day's low of 5,792 on profit-taking in select stocks.

The markets soon recovered from its lows, as buying was witnessed in almost all the sectors.

Buying gained momentum towards the closing hours as a sharp rally, notably in heavyweights, PSUs, auto, cement and tech stocks, saw the index zoom past the 6,000 mark to touch a high of 6,006.

The Sensex closed with a huge gain of 176 points at 5,993.

The Nifty rose 3.09% to end above the 1,900 levels at 1,905 - up 57 points.

Reliance rallied sharply, and surged 4% (Rs 22) to close at Rs 582. HLL rose sharply and closed at Rs 202 - up Rs 7 or 3.56%. ITC moved up a per cent (Rs 11) to Rs 1,051.

SBI accelerated by 4% (Rs 25) to Rs 649. BHEL gained ground in the afternoon trades, and ended 3.49% higher (Rs 20) at Rs 585. While HPCL added 4.15% (Rs 18) to Rs 444, MTNL was up 2.40% (Rs 3) at Rs 138.

L&T (up Rs 17 or 3.17% to Rs 551), ACC (up Rs 18 or 7.26% to Rs 261) and Gujarat Ambuja (up Rs 15 or 5.15% to Rs 302) garnered significant gains on sustained buying support. Grasim, however, ended in the red with a loss of 1.35% (Rs 15) at Rs 1,119.

Infosys jumped 2% (Rs 107) to close at Rs 5,591. While Wipro was up a per cent (Rs 10) at Rs 1,734, Satyam closed up a rupee at Rs 343.

Tata Motors shot up 9.20% (Rs 43) to end above the Rs 500 mark at Rs 510. Bajaj traded off-highs and ended with a gain of 1.63% (Rs 16) at Rs 1,000. Hero Honda was up 1.88% (Rs 9) at Rs 466.

Bharti Tele attracted considerable buying support, and vaulted 16.49% (Rs 21) to Rs 148.

Hindalco at Rs 1,322 (up Rs 43 or 3.405), ONGC at Rs 811 (up Rs 28 or 3.60%), BSES at Rs 560 (up Rs 42 or 8.17%) and ICICI Bank at Rs 306 (up Rs 14 or 4.71%) ended with steep gains.

Tisco notched up 3.77% gains (Rs 16) to Rs 443. Tata Power rose 6.41% (Rs 25) to Rs 408.

Zee added 2.40% (Rs 4) to Rs 160.

Cipla ended weak with a loss of 1.47% (Rs 19) at Rs 1,276. Ranbaxy was down a per cent (Rs 6) at Rs 1,024. Dr. Reddy's, however, had a firm outing, and moved up 4.19% (Rs 57) to close at Rs 1,430.

HDFC was down 1.51% (Rs 9) at Rs 621.
