Sensex surges 98 points at close

The Sensex on Tuesday opened with a gain of 11 points at 5,143. The market attracted considerable buying support through out the session, as stocks rallied sharply lifting the index above the 5,200 levels in the early afternoon trades.

The Sensex, after touching an intra-day high of 5,232 towards the closing hours, finally ended with a huge gain of 98 points at 5,229. The Nifty appreciated 1.80% (30 points) to close at 1,676.

While 28 Sensex stocks garnered gains, two declined today. The total volume of shares traded and its traded value totalled 2.16 crore (21.6 million) and Rs 789.07 crore (Rs 7,890.7 million), respectively.

ITC rallied sharply on sustained buying support, and ended 4% higher (Rs 38) at Rs 951. Reliance traded with steady gains and closed up a per cent (Rs 6) at Rs 486. The counter registered a volume of over 22.40 lakh (2.24 million) on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 108 crore (Rs 1,080 million). HLL, however, closed down a rupee at Rs 187.

Grasim (up Rs 27 or 3% to Rs 898), L&T (up Rs 13 or 3% to Rs 431), Gujarat Ambuja (up Rs 9 or 3% to Rs 286) and ACC (up Rs 5 or 2% to Rs 223) ended with sharp gains.

Dr. Reddy's notched up 3% gains (Rs 43) to Rs 1,369. While Ranbaxy shot up 2% (Rs 24) to Rs 1,105, Cipla was up a per cent (Rs 11) at Rs 1,230.

Infosys ended off-highs with a per cent gain (Rs 66) at Rs 4,976. While Satyam rose nearly 4% (Rs 12) to Rs 338, Wipro clocked a per cent gain (Rs 19) to close at Rs 1,548.

BHEL advanced 3% (Rs 14) to Rs 458. While SBI added Rs 5 to Rs 461, MTNL closed up a rupee at Rs 120. HPCL, however, traded in a narrow range through out the session, and ended down a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 390.

Hero Honda soared 3% (Rs 13) to Rs 398. Tata Motors moved up 2% (Rs 8) to Rs 424, while Bajaj added Rs 11 to Rs 986.

Hindalco at Rs 1,298 (up Rs 51 or 4%), ONGC at Rs 647 (up Rs 29 or 5%), BSES at Rs 465 (up Rs 24 or 5%) Tata Power at Rs 275 (up Rs 9 or 3%) and ICICI Bank at Rs 267 (up Rs 6 or 2%) scaled up on sustained buying support.

While Zee vaulted 7% (Rs 9) to Rs 141, Bharti Tele gained 2% to Rs 92. Over 29.39 lakh (2.94 million) Zee shares changed hands on the BSE with a value of Rs 40 crore (Rs 400 million).

Hexaware shot up 17% (Rs 56) to Rs 380. Rolta, on the back of a volume of over 34.24 lakh (3.42 million) on the BSE, advanced 15% (Rs 14) to Rs 108. HCL Infosys and Ramco Systems moved up 10% each to Rs 398 (up Rs 35) and Rs 343 (up Rs 32), respectively.

Polaris gained 7% (Rs 13) to Rs 205, and clocked a volume of over 21.19 lakh (2.12 million) on the BSE. Mastek leaped up 4% (Rs 13) to Rs 297, clocking a volume of over 11.23 lakh (1.12 million) on the BSE. i-flex closed up a per cent (Rs 10) at Rs 809.

Balaji Telefilms and Saregama gained 4% each to Rs 90 (up Rs 4) and Rs 73 (up Rs 3), respectively.

Federal Bank logged 5% gains (Rs 11) to Rs 212, while IDBI Bank added 7% (Rs 2) to Rs 39. Vijaya Bank, however, closed down a per cent at Rs 36.
