Reliance Energy chief Anil Ambani on Thursday met Union Power Minister P M Sayeed and senior ministry officials in New Delhi.
Sources said it was a courtesy call by Ambani, who is also a Member of Parliament, and there was no business-related discussion during the 10-minute meeting.
The ministry is of the view that private players should not have any kind of dependence on the government for running their enterprise and this meeting should therefore not assume any special significance, the sources added.
The Rs 12,600 crore (Rs 126 billion) company has proposed a 3,740 MW power plant at Dadri in Uttar Pradesh. As the plant is gas-based, Reliance Energy had earlier said it would be getting gas supply from Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Industries Limited.
The meetings in the power ministry assume importance in the wake of REL's ambitious Rs 80,000 crore (Rs 800 billion) investment plans, announced by Anil a day after settlement was reached between him and elder brother Mukesh on ownership issues of Reliance empire.
After getting Reliance Energy besides Reliance Capital and Reliance Infocomm on June 18, Anil had announced Rs 3,000 crore (Rs 30 billion) capital infusion in his power and financial companies.
Reliance Energy will carry out massive expansion worth Rs 80,000 crore in nuclear, hydro, solar, wind, gas and coal-based power projects during the next 10 years, Ambani had said on June 19 when he unveiled his new group Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Enterprises.
ADAE will invest Rs 1,000 crore (Rs 10 billion) in the proposed issue while the remaining equity would be sold to potential investors after getting regulatory clearances and shareholders nod, he said.
The issue would be made at an 8 per cent premium to the six-month average of REL share price, which works out to be over Rs 573 a share.
