The railways have earned a net surplus of Rs 290 crore (Rs 2.9 billion) in the first four months of the current financial year.
Total earnings in April-July 2004 were Rs 117 crore (Rs 1.17 billion) higher than the Budget Estimates for 2004-05, while ordinary working expenses were Rs 173 crore (Rs 1.73 billion) lower than the estimates, an official release said.
Total earnings registered a growth of 10.26 per cent over the last year as against a target of 4.6 per cent. Freight earnings went up a steep 10.26 per cent as compared to a target of 4.08 per cent growth, while earnings from passenger traffic went up 5.47 per cent as against the target of 4.8 per cent growth.
Freight loading growth was 6.4 per cent compared to a target of 4 per cent growth. Total loading stood at 237.20 million tonnes as compared to 223.04 million tonnes in the corresponding period last year.
Lead of freight traffic in April-July 2004 was 691 km as against the target of 680 km. It was also significantly up from 674 km in the corresponding period last year.
Freight traffic in net tonne km in millions went up 9.55 per cent over the previous year and exceeded the target by 2.78 per cent, the release said.
Also, passenger growth over the previous year was 4.91 per cent as against the target of 3 per cent growth.
