Govt plans Internet exchanges

The government is planning to set up Internet exchanges in the country. It has identified Chennai and Kolkata where these exchanges are expected to come up within the next few months, according to R K Arora, department of information and technology, government of India.

Speaking at the CEO's forum: business opportunities and investments in telecom, at the ongoing Telecom India 2003 organised by the India Tech Foundation, Arora said, "We should create Internet exchange in India so that there is more routing of Internet data through our exchanges. The government is thinking of setting them up at Chennai and Kolkata with one being at Bangalore."

On the usage of '.in' domain name, Arora while taking part in the deliberations said, "The Indian companies should look at ways to multiply the usage of .in domain for all companies."

The CEOs at the deliberations also discussed on how Indian companies can look at forming joint ventures abroad and maintain leadership in telecommunications.

In his opening session, Bhagwan Khurana, group president, Reliance Infocomm said, "There is advantage of unified services with the service provider can choose area as well as service."

He said of the world telecom subscriber base of 1,800 million, India has 42 million fixed and 25 million mobile subscribers.

Khurana pointed out India contributes to one per cent to the world's telecom revenue which is at $1 trillion.
