MTNL claims 63% of new cell users

For the fourth straight month, state owned Mahanagar Telecom Nigam has beaten private cellular operators in garnering the number of new subscribers, both in Delhi and Mumbai.

In March, MTNL accounted for 63 per cent of the new GSM connections in Delhi and 46 per cent in Mumbai, R S P Sinha, chairman and managing director, MTNL, said adding "for the last four months our subscribers has been increasing much faster than our competitors."

He also indicated that MTNL was finalising the next round of expansion of network both in Delhi and Mumbai.

Elaborating on the detail figures of new additions in March, Sinha said their net addition during the month in Delhi stood at 43,270 compared to little over 24,000 of Bharti and 30,127 by Hutch. Idea cellular witnessed over 25,000 users surrendering their connections.

Similarly, in Mumbai MTNL added 54,307 subscribers as against 25133 by BPL, 7122 by Hutch and over 32,400 by Bharti, Sinha said.
