Union IT and Communications Minister Dayanidhi Maran on Thursday said IT and telecom hardware industry will be under a zero-duty regime from 2005.

"A number of steps have been taken to meet the challenge of zero-duty regime. There is a need for corrective measures to put manufacturing on a higher growth rate path," Maran said giving away the Awards for Excellence in Electronics for the Year 2002-03 at a function held in New Delhi.

He said consequent to signing the Information Technology Agreement and with the liberalisation of Export-Import Policy and simplification of Customs and excise procedures, the country was committed to ensuring penetration of information technology.

Maran appealed to the countrymen to shift to dot IN (.in) if they were in different domain names.

In order to bring about a substantial increase in proliferation of .IN Internet domain name, a new .IN policy framework and implementation has been formulated.

This is aimed at putting in place a more liberal, efficient and market-friendly domain name registration system, he said, a detailed policy in this regard would be announced soon.

The Minister of State for Communications & Information Technology Shakeel Ahmad said that IT products were becoming affordable both in terms of quality and cost to the common man due to liberalisation and reduction in duty tariff.
