In a bid to check industrial unrest, the government on Friday extended "the public utility service" status of the coal industry till December 17.

In a notification, the labour and employment ministry declared coal industry as a public utility service under the Industrial Disputes Act of 1947 for another six months with effect from today.

"This has been done in public interest," an official statement said. The notification assumes importance as the special status mandates employees in the coal industry to give 6 weeks notice to their employers before proceeding on strike.

During conciliatory proceedings and seven days after their completion, the employees cannot go on strike.
