China's mobile base swells to 334 mn

China's information industry boomed in 2004 with the number of mobile phone users reaching 334 million and Internet subscribers touching 95 million, ministry of information industry has said.

The business revenue of Chinese information industry totalled around $69 billion in 2004, a year-on-year increase of 12 per cent, the ministry said on Wednesday.

Revenue in the telecommunication sector stood at $63 billion while that of the postal service reached $6.5 billion during the period.

According to the report, the number of Chinese Internet users reached 95 million people in 2004. Among them, 25 million Chinese could access the Internet through a broadband connection. The number of China's mobile phone users reached 334 million.

A total of 214 billion short messages were sent and received during this period, raking cash to the cellular service providers.

Meanwhile, the MII Minister, Wang Xudong said the government will encourage more telecom-related enterprises to seek international expansion by rolling out more preferential policies this year.

"We are now teaming up with related government sectors to hammer out more stimulative policies this year," Wang was quoted as saying by China Daily. The policies will be mainly in the areas of bank loans, credit insurance and international settlement, he was quoted as saying.
