Bharti grabs largest subscriber base

As the percentage of people using cellular mobile services in the country rose to 1.5 per cent as on June 2003, Sunil Mittal-promoted Bharti Group garnered the largest subscriber base of 37.50 lakh (3.75 million), followed by BSNL and Hutchison Group.

According to the performance monitoring report submitted by all the cellular mobile service providers to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India for the quarter ended June 2003, state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd notched a cellular customer base of 31.78 lakh (3.178 million) and Hutchison group 26.19 lakh (2.619 million).

The subscriber base of Idea group was pegged at 14.63 lakh (1.463 million), while that of BPL and Spice Communications was 11.67 lakh (1.167 million) and 7.09 lakh (709,000), respectively.

"The percentage of people using cellular mobile services as on June 2003 is about 1.5 per cent," an official release said.

The cellular subscriber base of Escotel stood at 5.99 lakh (599,000) and that of Reliance group 5.75 lakh (575,000).

The cellular subscriber base of another state-owned company Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd was at 2.90 lakh (290,000), it said adding, that the customer base of Aircel Digilink was 1.94 lakh (194,000) and that of Hexacom and RPG was 1.54 lakh (154,000) and 1.79 lakh (179,000), respectively.

The total cellular subscriber base stood at 1.5135 crore users (15.135 million), it added.
