The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Monday proposed setting up of a 'National-Do-Not-Call Registry' to save millions of phone users from unsolicited calls from telemarketing executives.

Telecom companies will have to set up a mechanism to receive

a request from subscribers who have opted for the 'Do Not Call' service, TRAI said in a statement.

The Authority has also proposed a penalty of Rs 500-1,000 a call for those telemarketing companies, who call up subscribers who have opted for the 'Do Not Call' facility.
