BSNL to add 46,000 broadband connections

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd on Thursday said it will add 46,000 broadband connections in a month to finish the current fiscal with 85,000 broadband customers in Maharashtra and Goa circles.

The state-owned telecom major presently has 39,000 customers and this would be doubled in a month time, BSNL Chief General Manager (Maharashtra Circle) Kuldeep Goyal said.

"Presently, we have 39,000 broadband customers. We are planning to increase this to 85,000 by March 31," he said.

The company plans to provide value added services including cable TV and video on demand through its connections, which will be provided in an year's time.

We are planning to introduce a lot of value added services including video-on-demand and cable television. We are working on that line and will introduce those services perhaps in an year' time," Goyal said.

Earlier, stating low PC penetration as the biggest challenge in increasing the broadband customer base, Goyal announced a partnership between BSNL and PC maker HCL Infosystems to offer personal computers for the DataOne broadband customers of the telecom major.

Under the scheme, the DataOne customers can choose an HCL PC ranging from Rs 18,490 to Rs 38,890 payable in instalments spread over 40 months.

The BSNL-HCL computers come with a Windows operating system built on an Intel platform.
