Imagine a drive without stopping your car at red lights. Every time you reached a traffic signal the light is green. Sounds interesting? This may soon come true.

Recently, Audi in Germany has demonstrated its 'travolution' technology that enables cars to communicate with traffic signals using wireless LANs (Locan Area Network) and UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) links so drivers can better time the lights and reduce fuel consumption.

Audi's travolution helps the cars to communicate with traffic lights. Using the information the technology informs the driver about the right speed he needs to drive at to avoid waiting at the signals. Once the driver has this information he can use the cruise-control option to achieve the desired speed.

Lesser time spent at traffic signals is bound to cut fuel consumption. The technology also enables to improve the flow of traffic.

"If this new technology were applied throughout Germany, exhaust emissions could be lowered by about two million tonnes of CO2 annually, equivalent to a reduction of approximately 15 per cent in CO2 from motor vehicles in urban traffic," said an Audi statement.
