Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices' facility in Bangalore, which will house its fourth chip design team worldwide and first outside the United States, will start functioning from next week.
"We will activate infrastructure of our India engineering centre next week," Gopal Krishna, general manager of AMD India Engineering Centre Pvt Ltd, said.
The 40,000 square feet facility can house 150-160 engineers apart from a data centre and sales and marketing team, he said.
AMD has already started recruiting engineers for the research and development centre, which is expected to start functioning by September.
"By September we would have set up a team of 15-20 engineering professionals," Krishna said.
The company had announced plans to ramp up its team of engineers in India to 40 by the end of 2004 take this number to 120 by 2005-end.
The India design centre will initially work with AMD teams in Austin, California and Boston for the design of new products.
"Firstly the team in India will work closely with the existing three teams, which will also train them, he said.
Once they have worked on a project, the India team would work as an independent unit, Krishna said.
He, however, refused to divulge the details of investment that AMD has made in its design facility. The company had earlier announced $5 million investment in India over the next two years.
