Row over Euro norms for cars

The operative part of the Supreme Court order

On May 14, the Supreme Court issued further orders. The operative part of the directives is that manufacturers able to self-certify any vehicle meeting Euro-1 norms or equivalent, shall be permitted unrestricted sale and registration between the June 1, 1999 and March 31, 2000.

For the purposes of the order, Euro-1 norms are to be equated with India-2000 norms "as defined by Government of India order vide GSR 493(E) dated 28th August '97".

After April 1, 2000, sale and registration of vehicles meeting Euro-II norms shall only be permitted.

Towards assisting those who may have already paid up, 1,250 petrol and 250 diesel vehicles which do not meet even Euro-I norms shall be permitted sale and registration from now till May 31, 1999.

Rohtash Mal, chief general manager, Maruti Udyog Ltd, in a very brief telephonic interview, confirmed that MUL shall be able to supply motor vehicles meeting the Euro-I specifications in another 7 to 10 days.

Additionally, motor vehicles fitted with and operating on CNG shall be exempted from any such restriction.

But most industry managers and lawyers steer clear of offering comments and reactions to the media. The intense drama reminds me of an experience.
