Air India and Indian Airlines will continue to operate its flights to Kuwait so that Indian expatriates can travel home if the need arose due to the US-led war on neighbouring Iraq, a top government official has said.

"There will not be any disruption or suspension of flights," Civil Aviation Secretary K Roy Paul said on Sunday.

He flew into Kuwait on Sunday to take stock of the situation and to reassure the Indian community.

Initially, there was an increase in demand for seats from Kuwait to India, but recent flights were at times operating with a few vacant seats, Paul told PTI on phone from Kuwait after a meeting with that country's Director General of Civil Aviation.

While commending their Indian counterparts for continuing to operate their flights without hitch through the current crisis, the Kuwait civil aviation authorities assured Paul that the airport in Kuwait City would remain open.

Paul also called on Indian ambassador Swash Pawan Singh.
