India at Wimbledon: Paes, Sania cruise; mixed day for Bopanna

India's Leander Paes and his Swiss partner Martina Hingis beat the German-Kiwi pair of Laura Siegemund and Artem Sitak in their mixed doubles second round match on Monday and marched ahead at the Wimbledon Championships.

The Indo-Swiss pair needed an hour and 17 minutes to register a 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Earlier, defending champions Sania Mirza and Hingis brushed aside Christina Mchale and Jelena Ostapenko to move into the women's doubles quarter-finals.

The top seeded Indo-Swiss pair overpowered the American-Latvia duo 6-1, 6-0 in a third round match that lasted just 46 minutes.

Dishing out a dominating performance, Sania-Martina converted five break-points and saved two en route their thumping victory.

Meanwhile, sixth seeds Rohan Bopanna and Romania's Florin Mergea fell by the wayside in the third round of the men’s doubles, beaten by tenth seeds John Peers and Henri Kontinen.

The Indo-Romanian pair lost to the tenth seeded Finnish-Australian pair 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-7(6), 8-6 in a little less than three hours.

Peers and Henri Kontinen had beaten India's Leander Paes and his Polish partner Marcin Matkowski 6-3, 6-2 in the second round.

Later in the day, in his mixed-doubles encounter, Bopanna and his Australian partner Anastasia Rodionova defeated Treat Huey and Alicja Rosolska 6-3, 7-5 to move into the third round.

Bopanna-Rodionova next meet Juan Sebastián Cabal and Mariana Duque-Mariño.
