October 12, 2009 09:37 IST

England striker Wayne Rooney will miss the team's final World Cup qualifier against Belarus due to a calf injury, the English Football Association said on Sunday.

The Manchester United forward has left the squad after suffering the injury during the 1-0 defeat in Ukraine on Saturday.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was also assessed by medical staff but remains in Fabio Capello's squad for the game against Belarus at Wembley on Wednesday.

Rooney's Manchester United team mate and goalkeeper Ben Foster has been called up in place of Robert Green, who is suspended after being was sent off against Ukraine.

Foster has recovered from the bruised ribs which kept him out of training until the end of last week.

England have already qualified for next year's World Cup finals in South Africa.
