India's Vishnu Vardhan stunned third-seeded Conor Niland of Ireland to progress to the second round of the qualifiers in the Aircel ATP Chennai Open in Chennai on Saturday.
The day also saw two other Indians advancing to the next round of the qualifiers.
Vardhan, world ranked 386, earned a hard-fought 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Niland, ranked 129th in the world.
The Indian saved two match points in the second set after losing the first. He will take on Ante Pavic of Croatia in the second round tomorrow.
Other Indians who advanced to the next stage were Rupesh Roy and Karunuday Singh.
Rupesh overwhelmed compatriot Vignesh Peranamallur 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) while Karunuday ended the challenge of Andreas Gremelmayr 6-2, 6-2.
However, Karan Rastogi, Sanam Singh and Shahbaaz Khan crashed out of the event after losing their qualifiers.
