Siddharth Suchde extends winning streak

December 05, 2002 17:35 IST

India's Siddharth Suchde extended his winning streak to breeze into the pre-quarter-finals even as five seeded players crashed out in the 12th World Junior men's squash championship at the Tamil Nadu Squash Rackets Association  courts in Chennai on Thursday.

The Indian, who trains in Scotland, was at his best against Peter David Creed of Wales and won the contest 9-3, 9-0, 9-0 in just 14 minutes.

Such was the Indian's form that Peter was reduced to a mere spectator during the match.

Suchde came up with some authentic strokes that caught his opponent off guard on many an occasion. His whipping forehand, bakchand strokes and deceptive drops close to the tin brooked no response from the Welshman.

His showing was by far the best by an Indian in a world junior meet.

However, Suchde cannot afford to be complacent as he is next up against second seeded Peter Barker of England, who was emphatic in his 9-0, 9-1, 9-0 win over Dick Lau of Hong Kong.

He joined his compatriot and top seed James Willstrop in the last 16 stage. James, ranked 45 in the world, humbled Sherif Moustafa Kamal of Egypt 9-2, 9-2, 9-2.

It was a black day for Egypt, considered one of the strong forces on the world circuit, as none of their players could get past the third round. All the six players, including their No.1 and third seed, Moustafa Essam, crashed out. Champions in the 1994 team event, they were runners-up to England in the next three editions.

Other seeded players joining Mustafa in the loser's list were eighth seed Ahmed Mohsen Hassan of Egypt, ninth seed Timothy Arnold (Malaysia), 11th seed Marco Datwyler of Switzerland and 12th seed Ashley Falthers (England).

Moustafa, who has been suffering from a back problem, was felled by American No.1 Julian Illingworth 6-9, 5-9, 9-6, 9-0, 9-4 in a gruelling five-setter, while Ahmed Mohsen lost from a winning position to Luke Margan of Australia 9-4, 9-6, 3-9, 1-9, 8-10.

Timothy lost to Shah Nawaz of Pakistan 3-9, 4-9, 6-9 and Marco Datwyler went down fighting to Khalid Atlas of Pakistan 9-6, 4-9, 7-9, 9-0, 2-9 while Ashley Falthers was subdued by Bader Hussaini of Kuwait 7-9, 6-9, 7-9.
