Second seed Somdev Devvarman and qualifier Yuki Bhambri advanced to the second round of the $50,000 ATP Challenger event with contrasting wins in Charlottesville.
While Somdev handed a 6-4, 6-4 defeat to American Alex Bogomolov Jr, Yuki had to toiled hard to record a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4) triumph over another local hope Alexander Domijan.
Yuki will now be up against sixth seed Marinko Matosevic of Australia, who got the better of American Lester Cook 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-5.
Somdev also faces an Australian in the second round in Greg Jones, who rallied to defeat American Kevin Kim 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
