Sania strolls into second round

October 04, 2005

Sania Mirza strolled into the second round on her first appearance at the Japan Open in Tokyo on Tuesday.

The Indian teenager, seeded eighth, beat qualifier Vilmarie Castellvi of Puerto Rico 6-1, 6-3 to set up a meeting with local hope Aiko Nakamura.

Castellvi, ranked 173rd, proved no match for the rampaging Indian, who put behind her disappointing early exits from the Wismilak International and Sunfeast Open to be at her aggressive best.

Though the unforced errors came to hound the Indian in the second set, Castellvi failed to grab the opportunities and concede the set 6-3.

Sania also tasted success in the doubles competition. She and Israel's Shahar PeerĀ rallied to beat the American pair of Jill Craybass and Carly Gullickson to enter the second round. They won 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
