Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza on winning the season-ending WTA Finals women's doubles title, saying it is a "proud accomplishment".
"Congratulations to Sania Mirza for the victory in WTA finals. This is yet another proud accomplishment!" Modi tweeted.
Sania was quick to acknowledge the Prime Minister's message, saying, "Thank you very much Sir. I am humbled by your wishes."
Sania and her Zimbabwean partner, Cara Black, ended the season and their partnership on a remarkable high, scoring a comprehensive victory in the summit clash of the season-finale in Singapore on Sunday.
The pair, making their debut at the year-end championship, prevailed 6-1, 6-0 over Su-Wei Hseih of Chinese Taipei and Shuai Peng of China in just about an hour.
Sania and Cara teamed up at the end of 2013 and won winning their first two tournaments, in Tokyo and Beijing. However, Cara, who has two-year-old son, recently announced that she would sit out the 2015 season to spend more time with her family.
This is not the first time the prime minister lauded the Hyderabadi for her achievements.
Sania, accompanied by her mother Naseema, had called on Modi after winning the US Open mixed doubles in September.
Partnering Bruno Soares of Brazil, she clinched her third mixed doubles Grand Slam title.
Modi, during a breakfast felicitation for the medal winners in the recently-concluded Asian Games in Incheon at his residence, said sportspersons do as much for the country as political leaders.
"Had a great interaction with our athletes who won medals in 2014 Asian Games. They are truly India's pride!" Modi tweeted after the breakfast meeting, which was also attended by Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
India won 57 medals, including 11 gold, at the Games in Korea. The country finished eighth in the overall standings.
