Sunitha, the highest ranked Indian in WTA charts after Sania Mirza, lost 4-6, 4-6 against second seed Zi Yan of China.

Pakistani Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, who qualified for the Wimbledon main draw, failed to get a ticket to the US Open main draw as he withdrew from the third round qualifying tie against American Scoville Jenkins.
Qureshi, after pocketing the first set 7-6 (7), lost the second set 2-6 and then retired.
