Popat falls by the wayside

India's challenge in the women's singles in badminton at the Olympics came to an end with the exit of Aparna Popat on Sunday.

The Indian champion, ranked 27th in the world, was shown the door by fourth seed and former Indonesian ace Mia Audina of The Netherlands in the round of 16.

Audina, who had won the silver medal at the Atlanta Games while representing Indonesia, won 9-11, 11-1, 11-3.

In her opening match, Popat had beaten South Africa's Michelle Edwards 11-6, 11-3.
