October 14, 2003 20:14 IST

Former world No. 1 Carlos Moya has confirmed participation in the Tata Open in January 2004.

The Spanish ace feels a good performance in the event will give him the impetus to stay on top of the Champions Race.

"Competing at the Tata Open in Chennai is a great way to start the ATP season. A good performance here will be a great confidence booster and will provide the impetus to stay on top of the champions race during 2004," Moya was quoted as saying in a statement from Tata Services.

It will be his third visit to Chennai.

Meanwhile, Romit Chaterjee, vice-president, Corporate Affairs, Tata Services, said Moya's confirmation is a great sign and augurs well for the tournament.

"Former French Open champion Carlos Moya is an amazing player. Confirmation from players of his calibre so much in advance will go a long way in attracting good talent and help make Tata Open 2004 a roaring success," she said.

The US $400,000 Tata Open is India and South Asia's only ATP International series event and one of only seven in all of Asia. It will be held in Chennai for the eighth consecutive year from January 5 to 11 next year.
