The Paralympic Games is a quadrennial multi-sport event, involving athletes with range of disabilities that include impaired muscle power, impaired passive range of movement, limb deficiency, leg length difference, vision impairment.
At the just concluded 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, that featured 23 Paralympic sports and 528 events, over the course of 11 days, saw 225 medals won by women, 265 claimed by men and 38 taken in mixed medal events.
The Rediff Labs team analysed the data from Rio 2016 Paralympic Games’ official website and created the above map with a total number of medals won by each country.
The size of the circle is the total number of medals won by the country at the Rio Paralympics.
With 107 gold, 81 silver and 51 bronze, China led the medals table at the Rio Paralympic Games, followed by Great Britain with 64 gold, 39 silver and 44 bronze medals.
Meanwhile, India, who had sent 19 athletes to the Games, finished at 43 in the medals tally, having won 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal.
India participated in 7 events, winning 4 medals and breaking 2 records.
India’s athletes Thangavelu Mariappan, Devendra Jhajharia won gold in the Men’s High jump - T42 event and Men’s Javelin Throw - F46 event respectively, while Deepa Malik won silver in the Women’s Shot Put - F53 event and Varun Singh Bhati won bronze in the Men’s High jump - T42 event.
Top-finishing China’s record at the Paralympic Games was spectacular – sending 310 athletes, and competing in 22 events, they won 239 medals and broke 158 records.
