Sania Mirza officially became the first Indian woman tennis player to be ranked world number one in doubles.

According to the latest rankings, released by the WTA on Monday, the Indian ace rose three rungs to 7660 points, which enabled her dethrone Italy's Sara Errani (7640 points).

The steep rise follows the Hyderabadi’s triumph in the WTA Family Circle Cup with partner Martina Hingis in Charleston on Sunday.

The top-seeded Indo-Swiss pair beat Casey Dellacqua and Darija Jurak 6-0, 6-4 in the final of the $731,000 clay-court tournament.

Sania earned 470 points from the title win.

Prior to Sania, only Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi attained the top ranking when they dominated men's doubles in the nineties.

The Family Cup was Sania's third successive title with Hingis. The pair are unbeaten since joining forces in March. They won the trophy in Indian Wells, their first tournament together, and followed it up with a triumph in Miami.

In 14 matches, spread over three tournaments, they lost only three sets.
