India win mixed air rifle bronze at Asiad

India opened its account in the 18th Asian Games through Ravi Kumar and Apurvi Chandela, who won the bronze medal in the 10 metres Mixed Air Rifle event in Jakarta on Sunday.

 

The duo of Kumar and Chandela finished third with a score of 429.9.

Chinese Taipei took gold with 494.1 and a Games record, while China bagged silver with 492.5.

Kumar and Chandela entered the final as the second-best team with 835.3 points.

However, Manu Bhaker and Abhishek Verma failed to qualify for the final of 10m mixed air pistol event.

Earlier in the day, the Indian contingent registered its first victory at the Games as the country's women's kabaddi team made mincemeat of Japan, winning their Group A opener 43-12, in Jakarta, on Sunday.

The emphatic victory kept India on track to complete a hat-trick of titles in the multi-sport quadrennial extravaganza.

The men's team, also one of the favourites, start their campaign against  Bangladesh later in the day followed by a match against Sri Lanka in the evening. 

Indian women lose to Chinese Taipei in basketball

The Indian women's basketball team had a disappointing outing as it lost 61-84 to Chinese Taipei. 

This was India's second defeat in the group stage, having earlier lost to Kazakhstan 61–79.

n the Group A match, India trailed 28-33 at the half time after having led for some time at the GBK Basketball Hall.

India next plays Unified Korea on Monday and then take on hosts Indonesia on August 23.
